Anaesthesia Quick Reference Chart

This a chat with common reference ranges during anaesthesia as a quick reference and what to do in certain situations

Variable<o:p></o:p>

Dog<o:p></o:p>

Cat<o:p></o:p>

Action<o:p></o:p>

Heart Rate<o:p></o:p>

50 – 1201<o:p></o:p>

120 – 2001<o:p></o:p>

High: check depth of anaesthesia/repeat opiates due

Low: Check depth of anaesthesia. And lighten as required / drugs to increase HR (check with VS)

Resp Rate<o:p></o:p>

10 – 20

15 – 25

<o:p> </o:p>

Temperature (ºC)<o:p></o:p>

37.5 – 39.2

37.8 – 39.2

Hyper: Remove external heat sources and attept to cool (fans, damp towels etc)

Hypo: use external heat sources, Hot hands2, heated flushing fluids, bubble wrap, foil blankets<o:p></o:p>

Arterial BP (mmHG)<o:p></o:p>

Systolic<o:p></o:p>

110 - 190

120 – 170

<80: using Doppler (see under mean)

Diastolic<o:p></o:p>

25 - 90

30 – 100

<o:p> </o:p>

Mean<o:p></o:p>

70 – 1003<o:p></o:p>

60 – 903<o:p></o:p>

<60: reduce depth of anaesthesia. Bolus of crystalloid (10mls/kg), if no better bolus of colloid (5mls/kg up to max of 20ml/kg/24hr)

>100: check depth of anaesthesia, pain response.

Saturation %<o:p></o:p>

> 95

> 95

<95: check sensor has not constricted tongue

PaCO2  mmHG<o:p></o:p>

28 – 60

28 - 45

>60: IPPV, possibility of rebreathing CO2 and check depth of anaesthesia

<28: IPPV check ET tube, connections and rebreathing bag

<o:p> </o:p>

Look for trends rather than one off readings and inform VS if concerned

  1. Can be higher following induction and then drop
  2. Use 500ml saline fluid bags and heat in microwave rather than gloves filled with hot water, these can be reused and less likely to pop.
  3. Under ACP and Isoflurane MABP is lower than conscious animals
