Especially the vetergesic ones, as I have known vets and nurses to open them with their bare hands (ouch!) and the vial shatters in their hand
If you dont have one of those special vial openers, ALWAYS used a piece of tissue, or similar to protect your hands, should the vial shatter. Better safe than sorry!
PS: Whilst you're here, take a moment to see our latest job opportunities for vet nurses.
Oh and on another the NHS are moving away from glass vials and plastic bottles being introduced.
I was at a VN conference at the weekend and got one of the snappy things free from a Dechra rep (with some buphenorphine info). Used it today, and it's great!
i agree it is a matter of confindence, luckily i've never cut myself on the vials- touch wood
oo really? I think its all a matter of confidence with snapping vials! When I first started, I had no problem with them for months, until inevitably one shattered and I know have a tiny scar on my index finger! Then after that they seemed to shatter a lot more frequently, like they knew I was scared of them!! We have only had the snappy thing for about a month and I feel confident using it, perhaps annoyingly so- "look,look...oo..oo..aaah! magic!"
Maybe it will turn on me in a few months time...
Not keen on the vial snappy things! Seen someone get a nasty cut off of one! Prefer to use bottom of tunic or a piece of hand towel
an animalcare rep popped into to see us not long ago, and I remember seeing an ampule breaker on a buprecare ad, so I asked her about it! She diasappeared, then came back with one for us! yay! they are ace! I'm just scared a veterinary will wander off with it, as I think they are quite expensive...
IF you break it the right way, it should be fine. Though i always use the leaflet in the box, better to be safe than sorry!!
I've been to A&E twice with glass vial injuries!!!
Still have a scar on one of my fingers from my first one.
I hate them!!!
Hi, The vial poppers are ace I ordered one last year following BVNA congress and have often wondered how my fingers survived before!! I would encourage ALL nusres to have one on them at work :-)
the bottom of your tunic is good for this... we've had some really tough little vails of vetergesic to try and open recently... little buggers!
