I was told this tip by a South African Vet.. Not sure if it has been scientifically researched, but seems to work!
When judging what size of E.T tube to select for a canine patient, take the tube and measure it's width against the gap between the dog's nostrils. (hold the end that attaches to anaesthetic machine and rest the soft end against dog's nose).
Some dogs are easy to guess the tube size on, but others can be deceiving, this trick strangely works, try it and see! I normally select one size up and one size down to have on hand just in case..
PS: Whilst you're here, take a moment to see our latest job opportunities for vet nurses.
Yes is a very useful tip but you will find you can select an ETtube upto 1-1.5mm bigger and will still fit. I find only using the nostrels as a minimum guide. (SBT are an exception to the ule having only a small larynx)
It works! have used this a lot - get some funny looks from some of the vets though! ;)
This works,I was told this tip when working in Australia years ago and have used it ever since, its very handy.
Great tip! I agree some dogs arent too bad to guess the size ofmtube needed but some can be very different on the inside! I'll try this tomorrow!
wow thats a great I'm gonna go and see if that works now thanks! x
Know this hasn't been researced, but have done it for a long time and very rarely has it not worked.
Hmm, I will definitely be trying this out as I am pretty useless at estimating tube sizes and usually present the nurse/vet with about 5 different ones!!!
Interesting, as a student it has confused me an awful lot setting up.
Ooohh I like it!
Oooo will try that tomorrow!!
