Vets and vet nurses are being asked to take part in a survey which aims to help the industry get a better understanding of canine reproduction health issues.
The survey is being conducted by Virbac Animal Health as part of its reproductive health awareness campaign.
Product manager Chris Geddes MRCVS said: "Following a series of CPD seminars on reproduction, it is evident that the views and experiences of vets vary considerably when it comes to companion animal sexual health.
"The aim of the survey is to obtain a clearer picture of the thoughts and experiences of vets and VNs on the neutering of dogs in the UK. The questionnaire will help us gain a better understanding of practice needs in this often sensitive area, and help provide improved support for vets and pet owners alike.
"Whilst attitudes on neutering vary from country to another, it is clear that within the UK, opinion among vets and pet owners is wider than perhaps we currently realise. The UK currently has the highest canine male and female neutering rate in Europe. What this means will depend on your viewpoint and experiences, however we know that some practices are beginning to offer clients a wider range of options."
He added: "As a veterinary-focused business our aim is to provide solutions which will help support and develop the relationship between practice and client. This survey is part of that continuing process."

Intervet / Schering-Plough has announced that its leptospirosis vaccine, Nobivac Lepto 2, is now back in stock at all wholesalers and that the production delay affecting supply has been fully resolved.
David Hallas, general manager, Intervet / Schering-Plough Animal Health, said: "We foresee no further supply difficulties on Nobivac Lepto 2. I very much regret the inconvenience experienced over this difficult period and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all of our customers for their patience, understanding and support.
"A combination of advancing production and a very timely batch release process has enabled us to re-introduce Nobivac Lepto 2 ahead of the previously-indicated timing of early May, and we are pleased that we have been able to deliver on the assurances that we made back in January."
The company says that current stock levels and planned deliveries are all in place.

Dechra Veterinary Products has launched a new online fluid therapy distance-learning course for vets and nurses, to help maximise the potential of its Vetivex® fluids range.
The Fluids Knowledge Programme has been created to provide comprehensive and flexible online CPD for companion animal and equine practitioners. The coursework, which counts for six to eight hours of CPD learning, includes the latest thinking from fluid therapy specialists Dr Ava Firth, Karen Humm and Kevin Corley.
Dechra says the course combines theoretical and practical advice on fluid therapy for both small animals and horses, and can be used for training, as a refresher, and to develop thinking on fluid therapy. Self-assessment questions included within the course allow progress to be monitored throughout.
Gwenda Bason, marketing director for Dechra Veterinary Products, said: "We've spent months of research and development producing this online learning portal for professionals. It will enable vets and nurses to improve their knowledge, understanding and patient care. When clipping a dog with short hair, that takes ages to get rid of all the little hairs that seem to stick like glue and no matter how much you clean they still seem to be there. Use a lint roller on the area before scrubbing it gets rid of almost all the hair!
In an emergency situation, either post extubation or a patient coming in with respiratory distress and are unable to intubate the patient.
Grab a 10F Dog Urinary Catheter and a 3.5mm ET tube blue connector. The connector fits perfectly in the end of the catheter.
The catheter can then be introduced into the patients trachea. A breathing system can then be attached to the blue connector and oxygen can be supplied to your patient!

It is well known in human medicine that rest promotes healing and well being. If possible once your morning rounds are finished on the ward, and all pets have been medicated, fed and toileted, switch off the lights and make it a quiet place, even for an hour or so. I have been doing this for a while and I think the patients appreciate it, rather than the noise and glaring light all day. I think the less stimulation the better, although I do have the radio on very low in the background. I think it lulls them to sleep
When animals are breathing in GA gasses via a face mask, gasses may leak out and cause harm to the staff. Place the mask on the animals face + attach it to the circuit. Tie some WOW bandage around the base of the mask, push the knot around so that it is in line with the animals chin. Then tie the WOW bandage up and around the animals head, securing the knot underneath the ears.
When moving the animal (to theatre etc..) the mask stay's on the face, just disconnect the circuit and transport them through. This makes the anaesthetic so much smoother, easier, quicker!!
During a dental on a cat or dog the wow bandage tied to the et tube gets all minging,
Why dont you try a used drip line to tie in the et tube. It's easily washed down during the dental, it does not catch.

The procedure was performed on a 13-year-old Siberian Husky called Marigold, which was diagnosed with a malignant mammary tumour last year.
Unfortunately, despite £20,000 worth of radiotherapy, Marigold failed to respond to treatment, and the tumour spread.
Marigold’s owner, Mrs Norma Pophosherti from Derby said: “We couldn’t bear to part with Marigold, she’s one of the family, so when we heard about the groundbreaking work being done at the University of Bromsgrove Veterinary School, we had to give it a go.
Unfortunately there was no realistic prospect of a donor from a matching breed of dog.
Thankfully, though, a local man with a 4-year-old Labrador stepped forward to help.
Hit by the cost of living crisis, he’d been unable to afford to keep his dog and was about to have it put to sleep when he heard about the Phophosherti family’s search for a donor.
Although he wished to remain anonymous, he said: “It gives me great comfort to think that Buddy will be able to live on, and spare the Phophoshertis from the pain of losing their beloved Marigold”
Professor Flora Olip MRCVS led a team of 6 veterinary surgeons who undertook the 28 hour procedure, which is estimated to have cost over £100,000.
She said: “This was a very tricky procedure which probably only had a 30% chance of success.
"But I’m delighted to say that Marigold’s new body has taken well, and she can now look forward to perhaps a whole more year with Phophosherti family, albeit as less of a Siberian Husky, and more of what you might call a Huskador"
Flora added: “More importantly, this heralds the way for similar procedures in humans, which I think are probably just a few years away now.”

Ellie Baggs, who qualified in 2008, and Sarah Reilly, who qualified in 2016, decided to launch the service after seeing the problems that cat owners were having in transporting their animals to the not-for-profit clinic where they worked.
They considered setting up a nurse-owned veterinary practice, but decided the costs were too great, and the overheads presented too much of a risk if they didn't get enough clients through the door.
Being a mobile nurse clinic also means they can offer their service in a more comfortable, stress-free environment for their patients.
That's not to say that starting a home service is all plain sailing. Sarah said: "Lots of things we're taken for granted, such as deliveries, rules, regulations etc were not straightforward to set up"
Ellie said: "There is a lot of competition out there so the worry is what is making us stand out - why choose us?
"We are hoping being cat-only and uniquely nurse-owned and holding ISFM nurse certificates will show everyone we are dedicated to cats and their wellbeing."
Whiskers 'n' Beans will launch at the end of June 2024.

While nearly 50% of all Vetpol SQPs exceeded their CPD targets last year, none did so by as large a margin as Stacey, who did over 40 hours: more than 13 times her target.

The survey found that 51% of cat and dog owners didn't research their pets breed before buying. Of the 22% who then regretted their decision, 31% said it was because they didn’t have enough time to look after the animal, 18% because they turned out to be allergic to the animal, and 16% because they didn’t like their pet’s personality.
Apparently dog owners were more likely to regret their new pet (26%) than cat owners (16%).
Sainsbury’s has therefore launched the Pawfect Match tool, designed to help future pet owners to make informed decisions when choosing the most suitable breed for them. The pet picker asks you a number of questions about your circumstances and makes a number of suggestions based on how you answer.
Sainsbury's campaign is being fronted by Scott Miller MRCVS, who said: "I am saddened to hear that so many pet owners are regretting the animals they have chosen as companions. Dogs and cats come in all shapes and sizes, and have different temperaments. Looking after a pet is a huge commitment so it is important that people undertake adequate research before buying a pet to ensure it is a happy experience."

I tried Sainsbury's pet picker and it recommended a Basset Hound as the first choice. Fair enough. I always think they look like the living embodiment of the word 'hangdog', which is not really my cup of tea. Luckily, the tool makes more than one suggestion. One of the criteria I'd specified was 'quiet and calm', so the second recommendation, a whippet, was fine. But the third caught my eye. A Border Collie. What? Whaaaaaat? Quiet and calm? A Border Collie. Are you having a laugh? I thought Border Collies usually need to be sent to some sort of asylum.
Still, if Sainsbury's tool encourages more people to think harder about their choice, that's no bad thing. But they might like to rethink the Border Collie recommendation.
Vetnapp offers a secure alternative to traditional paper records, allowing for the entry of drugs administered, recording of physiological parameters (for example, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure), and recording complications occurring during an anaesthetic.
The final anaesthetic chart can be converted to a PDF and attached to patient records, simplifying the paper trail.
Alastair, who works at Willows Referrals, says his motivation for developing the app was born out of frustration with handwritten anaesthetic records which can often be incomplete, illegible and easily lost.
Alastair said: "Vetnapp is excellent for ease of data entry via the use of sliders and drop-down lists. It also stores records, allowing easy retrieval, which is not possible with paper records.
"Now the app is available for both Apple and Android devices, it is much more accessible. I have even had people downloading it in Australia, America and China, which is fantastic."
"It’s still very much early days and I hope its popularity grows over time. Ideally, I would like it to be downloaded by veterinary groups, as well as independent practices."

I know what it's like in practice, trying to find the scissors, thermometer, nail clippers, stitch removers etc all those little bits and pieces we use everyday, well, after a discussion here on the forum, some good tips were mentioned - Sal the 1st said about using a bumbag - one of those your wear around your waist. Thats a fab idea! I hope Sal doesnt feel I stole her idea lol but it's too good to keep to ourselves!
Attach a giving set (which is attached to an empty drip bag) to the end of the catheter and ensure the giving set is 'open'. This will ensure the patient stays clean and dry from urine as all bladder contents will go into the drip bag.
Rabbit anaesthetics!
Although the pedal reflex always disappears in animals under anaesthetic, this stays in the rabbit!
This is a very affective way of monitoring the depth of a rabbit's anaesthetic. When a rabbit is in a medium plane of anaesthesia, the pedal reflex will be present! If this reflex is ever not present, the rabbit may be too deep! Even during anaesthetics such as a rabbit spay, this reflex should still be present!
The general charts that are published for rabbit anaesthesic drugs actually show the highest dose date's available (but they do not state this). In our practice we use TDK, we always reduce the domitor what ison the chart to allow the rabbit into a nice plane of anaesthesia and it works very well!
Also, TDK acts just as quickly and effective when given subcutaneously instead of given intramuscular in a rabbit. IM injections can be very stressful for rabbits, all of these little tips work well together to provide a stress free anaesthetic for your rabbit!!

Use betadine to clean the blood stained coat rather than hibi, it gets it out in seconds! no need for scrubbing either.
Dogs hate them, and the bed usually ends up bundled in a corner after the dog has had a total hissy fit getting into the kennel due to it beiong slippery.
Use rubber car mats to stop the beds slipping, the dogs walk in no problems and no stress, and they are easily washed too.
The 4% increase was approved by the Privy Council and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
Dr Tshidi Gardiner, RCVS Treasurer, said: “As with last year, RCVS Council recognises that we are living in difficult economic times, and have tried to keep the fee increase to a minimum.
"However, it is important that we increase fees in line with inflation, as well as take into account additional related costs, to ensure we are fulfilling our regulatory remit to the best of our abilities and meet our strategic priorities.”
The veterinary nurse annual renewal period will begin in the autumn, from when the new fees will apply.
A survey of almost 1400 ferret owners carried out by the Ferret Education & Research Trust (FERT) and pet food manufacturers James Wellbeloved has revealed that 40% of the UK's ferret owners never take their animals to a vet, with a further 9% saying they visit the vet only occasionally.
In addition, 76% of ferret owners have not had them microchipped, 64% have not bothered with vaccination against distemper and 74% with vaccination against rabies.
Almost three quarters are registered with a vet for emergency treatment, but 26% are not registered at all.
Ian Kearns from FERT said: "This is quite an alarming picture in terms of ferret welfare; however it offers a clear opportunity for vets to address the issue. Ferrets are growing fast in popularity as pets, and it may be that as their role changes they will visit the vet more - but we believe that vets can seize an opportunity by promoting ferret welfare via the waiting room."
The survey also showed that 65% are fed on mixed biscuits and meat. James Wellbeloved Ferret Complete Food was the clear leader, outselling its' nearest rival by almost five times to one. Over half are kept outdoors, and there is a wide choice of bedding material including commercially made washable fabric, straw and paper.
Peter Lancaster, James Wellbeloved marketing director said: "Ferrets are growing in popularity, but because owners sometimes don't do enough research a worrying number are ending up in rescues. Veterinary practices are of course very well-placed to focus on ferret welfare, and we'd urge any vets and vet nurses who want to know more to get in touch with the team at FERT."
