The Prime Minister's website has received a petition for a new law making it compulsory to microchip pets in the UK.
If you wish to support this petition, please click here and add your name: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/MicrochipPets/
The full petition reads:
"I am a responsible pet owner and have both my parrots and dog microchipped. I genuinely believe that all pets (where possible) should be microchipped.
I feel that it should be mandatory and is part of being a responsible pet owner. This should act as a "licence". I strongly beleive that this course of action will protect many discarded, stolen and mistreated pets every year as there will be no escape for the owners as the pet can be traced back to them.
I appreciated that due to size and temperament some pets may not be able to be microchipped, but certainly dogs, cats, horses, valuable / larger birds, rabbits etc should be.
I hope you agree that £30 for a microchip is good value, if owners cannot afford this then they shouldnt be considering a pet in the first place.
Please can you give this idea serious consideration as I feel we must do something to protect the pets that do not have a voice in our society."
PS: Whilst you're here, take a moment to see our latest job opportunities for vet nurses.
Would like to see it be compulsory for all appropriate pets. Think of the stray centres etc. Life wuld be so much nicer for the poor pets of genuine homes that get lost or stolen. Animals should be scanned at every appt as a matter of course I think.
totally agree to have dogs and cats microchipped and also for a licence of some sorts, with a much bigger annual fee for entire animals which would hopefully get more neutered, also have a policy if you need to be registered with the pdsa (who do a fab job in some very difficult situations) animals must be neutered to qualify whether done by them or private clinics. Then maybe we wouldnt be overrun with status symbol bull dog breeds.
I agree with the reintroduction of the dog license. but dog license microchip or both neither scheme would work if it wasnt enforced. who would enforce it? wouldnt be the police - it wouldnt be vet practices (think how many animals never see a vet in their lifetime). great idea in theory but in practice?
I agree, microchipping is a valid act to follow but it should be made part of being a responsible pet owner. There are many pet owners who lack full responsibility and general husbandry.
I would petetion to bring back proper dog liscences! Where in people have to take a course on basic animal husbandry, vaccinations, general feeding guidelines etc etc etc I don't really see where just a microchipping petetion would make a huge difference!
