A new device call the Animalarm, which sends dog owners an SMS text message if the temperature in their car exceeds a preset threshold, has been launched this week.
Apparently, you can also ring the device to check what the temperature is inside your car.
The Animalarm sells for £108 inc. VAT from www.animalarm.co.uk.
Now all we need is a bit of sun.
PS: Whilst you're here, take a moment to see our latest job opportunities for vet nurses.
I think it's a great idea although as with all technology I wouldn't rely on it solely. I often have to leave my dog in the car, he is blind and suffers from separation anxiety and yes as a vet nurse I know it's not ideal but it's the place where he feels happiest so to have an additional safeguard would be great.
I'm sure it was reported that police officers in the UK have these sort of things on their cars and one of their dogs still cooked year 2011 approx.
I pray that plain old common sense just becomes more common than it is!!!
Wouldn't trust it!
I have also looked at the website where this product is sold and have read other problems that could arise causing failure of the equipment, e.g. the equipment is not waterproof and yet the image demonstrates it is placed near the dog's location in the car, should a dog start to pant excessivly or hypersalivate, this of course could be an issue. In addition to this, there is a note to state that as long as the phone has reception, then there is no limit to how far you can go away to the car; this of course then poses a problem if you need to return from the car urgently to assist your dog. And in addition to this, should the device be worked upon a pay as you go SIM card and run out of credit, there will be no text sent to identify an issue with the temperature. My concerns go on!
I must agree with Rebecca. I can see too many potential issues with this device i.e. batteries running out, general malfunction, someone not having charge or reception on their mobile phone and more.
Under no circumstances would I recommend to an owner that they leave their dog in a car. There is also the added risk of the dog being stolen if left in a car. And on top of this, regardless of the heat, the dog may become so distressed at being left that they start to pant which essentially could lead to dehydration.
Nothing is fail safe and this is certainly not a risk I would be prepared to take.
nice idea but will it encourage more O' to leave dogs in cars. And it doesnt take long for dogs to die in hot cars so if the O' is a few minutes away from the car when the text arrives they will need to act quickly to get back to the car. Also even if the O' is fast to respond it still would be horrible environment as the car warms up.
Fab invention. About time. Link doesn't seem to work though.
