The College of Animal Welfare is offering fully funded apprenticeship training (Level 3 Diploma) to under-19s looking to start training as a veterinary nurse this September.
According to the College, the only thing your practice would need to pay for is the student's RCVS fees i.e. enrolment and examination fees.
The next Advanced Apprenticeship in Veterinary Nursing programme starts the week commencing 3 September from the College's Huntingdon, Potters Bar and Leeds centres and enrolments are being taken now.
The College says that if your student is waiting for exam results this Summer they can still apply now, and if for any reason they are unsuccessful and do not get the required grades your practice will receive a full refund.

well hopefully as the apprenticeship is fully funded and wouldnt be costing the practice too much they would be able to afford to pay their apprentices a little more than the £2.60/hr minimum wage for under 19s and 19yr olds in their first year of apprenticeship? Because if they dont I dont see too many of them seeing the course through, which is helpful to nobody.
I think it's because the CAW will get funding from the Government in order to be able to offer this scheme.
I agree with Tracy, perhaps the age limit should be increased due to high levels of unemployment etc. That's something the Government should look at doing and not limit these opportunities to those under 19.
Why is this sort of ageism acceptable in today's society? Surely offering free places to students who meet a certain criteria, such as lay staff who have worked in practice for years and have not had the opportunity to train?
I'm not saying that anyone under 19 does not deserve to train, but you are much more likely to find a dedicated student who will be determined to complete the course AND stay in the profession if you offer this to more mature and experienced individuals.
