Pet Travel Scheme - Client FAQs

Here are some of the more common questions that clients may have about the PETS scheme:

Q) Can my pet have other vaccinations at the same time as a rabies inoculation?
A) Yes, it is important to keep routine vaccinations up to date too. Do bear in mind that vaccination can make some animals feel lethargic, so if your pet is sensitive, it may be wise to stagger them.

Q) What happens if the rabies antibody titre is insufficient?
A) Your pet will need to be revaccinated and a second antibody test performed 30 days following the inoculation.

Q) Can animals other than cats and dogs participate in the Pet Travel Scheme?
A) No.

Q) What arrangements do I need to make before returning to the UK?
A) A declaration of residency (PETS 3) form must be completed on the day of return to the UK. This states that the pet has not been out of any of the qualifying countries in the 6 months before embarkation. The PETS 3 form may be obtained in advance from DEFRA or from the practice. PETS 3 may also be obtained from carriers at check-in, or from the British embassies of qualifying countries. 24-48 hours before checking in for travel back to the UK, the animal must have been treated against ticks and tapeworms and issued with an official certificate (PETS 2).

Q) What if I am only going on a day trip, will I have to wait 24 hours before coming home?
A) No. If a short trip abroad is planned, the tick and tapeworm treatment may be administered before leaving and the PETS 2 certificate (issue of parasite treatment) completed. This is only acceptable if it is possible to administer the treatment between 24 and 48 hours before embarking for return to the UK.

Q) Can pets travel under the PETS scheme on a private boat or plane?
A) No. Only approved routes and carriers may be used. For an up to date list of approved routes and carriers, ring the PETS Helpline on 0870 2411710, or visit http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm.

Q) Are any dogs excluded from the PETS scheme?
A) Yes. 'Dangerous Dogs', such as the American Pit Bull, are not allowed to participate in the scheme. In addition, France will not allow the entry of any cross-breed of 'Pit Bull-type' unless its heritage can be proven.
